A Rousing end to the 2022/23 Season with Viva Italia!

28th June 2023

On Saturday 24th June 2023 Northampton Bach Choir ended its 2022/23 season with an unforgettable evening of Italian Baroque music entitled Viva Italia! including Vivaldi's Gloria, Sonata Duodecima and Magnificat by the lesser-known Italian composer Isabella Leonarda and Handel's Dixit Dominus. Isabella Leonarda was easily the most prolific woman composer of the century, and the choir is pleased to continue to showcase the work of unjustly neglected female composers.

Under the baton of the choir's fourth guest conductor of the season Simon Toyne and accompanied by the acclaimed orchestra Eboracum Baroque with 10 superb soloists from The Old Royal Naval College Trinity Laban Chapel Choir, the Northampton Bach Choir delivered a performance with tremendous energy and passion to a large, highly appreciative audience.

A member of the audience, who was visibly moved by the concert, shared their thoughts, stating,

It is the best concert we've been to. You could really appreciate the full impact of the choir with the amazing acoustics in the church. It was a truly immersive experience.

Handel's Dixit Dominus is widely known to be of staggering technical difficulty and was an ambitious undertaking for an amateur chorus. One choir member remarked

Truly amazing to sing with such a body of singers. Weren't the soloists terrific? Gave me a boost. I call it sublime chaos (at moments!!) The audience experienced the immense power of the work, something you don't quite appreciate from a recording. Northampton Bach Choir cracked it.

As Simon Toyne assumes his role as the choir's full-time Musical Director from September, Northampton music lovers can look forward to an exciting program of concerts in the upcoming season. The first concert on 27th of October will be Haydn's Creation and will be held again at St. Matthew's church to take advantage of the extraordinary acoustics.
