The music selected for the service of Choral Evensong at Westminster
Abbey is, in the majority, the same programme as was sung at
Winchester Cathedral, earlier in the year. In keeping with the
church calendar, the appointed Psalm is 72, and will be sung to a
chant by Sir Ivor Atkins (1869-1953), a former organist of Worcester
Cathedral, and the dedicatee of a number of works by Sir Edward
Elgar.
The canticles sung at the service are Henry Smart's (1813-79)
dramatic Evening Service in Bb with its fanfare introduction,
the Preces and Responses by Richard Ayleward (1626-69), and
the anthem - in a change from originally listed programme - is
Francis Jackson’s vivid setting of Sing praise to God who reigns
above, composed for Exeter Cathedral Voluntary Choir in 1981. Dr
Jackson was organist of York Minster from 1946 to 1983, and
continues to compose as he approaches his 102nd birthday later this
year.Programme:
