We are delighted to be returning to live music-making after nearly
two years since our last concert performance (Brahms Ein
deutsches Requiem on 23 November 2019), and where else could we
start other than with what is surely the greatest Oratorio of all
time, Handel’s Messiah. Handel composed his most famous piece in 1741, and continued to work on it after its initial performance, finally arriving at the version we know today in 1754. Impressive solo arias, like Every valley shall be exalted and Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion, are interspersed with compelling choruses - not least the great Hallelujah chorus and the final crowning glory, Worthy is the Lamb. Handel’s oratorio, to Charles Jennens’ remarkable libretto, tells the story of Jesus' birth, life, death, resurrection, and final victory over sin and death. We are delighted to be joined by period orchestra Charivari Agréable and a stellar cast of soloists for this performance. Of course, the pandemic is likely to part of our lives for some time to come; this season we leave our normal concert venue, St Matthew’s Church, as we explore larger venues which are much easier to ventilate and give us flexible seating options. We will be performing Messiah in the Spinney Theatre which should (keeping everything crossed!) enable us to make the necessary adjustments so that the concert can go ahead even if some restrictions return. It also has the added advantage of excellent parking and comfortable raked seating. We look forward to welcoming you back!
