The music selected for the service of Choral Evensong at Coventry
Cathedral is, in the majority, the same programme which will be sung
at St Paul's Cathedral the following week. In keeping with the
church calendar, the Psalm appointed for Coventry is 33, and an
addition Introït is sung, marking the Eve of St Luke's Day. Composed
by our Musical Director, Lee Dunleavy (b. 1979), this Introït sets
the traditional versicle and response beginning, Pax huic domui
(Peace be to this house: and unto all who dwell therein), from the
tenth chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Luke. Both services
will include Henry Smart’s (1813-79) dramatic Evening Service in
Bb with its fanfare introduction, the Preces and Responses
by Richard Ayleward (1626-69), and the anthem Exultate Deo by
Samuel Wesley (1766-1837), which Dr Arthur Wills described as
“rivalling Bach himself”.Programme:
